Guidance & Counseling

School Counselor

The counselor is available for several types of counseling: personal, academic and career counseling. Students may make an appointment to see the counselor during school hours or may drop into the counselor's office at any time which is located next to the principal's office. Brief personal counseling is also available; if the counselor feels that more in-depth counseling is needed, a referral to an outside agency is made.

If you have concerns about your son or daughter, please feel free to contact me at (906)483-2540, ext 8111.

Paying for College

If you have concerns about your son or daughter, please feel free to contact me at (906)483-2540, ext 8111.

In order to receive any student aid (including loans) for college, you must fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The forms are available in the counselor's office and you can also fill your form out online. If you are planning to fill it out online, you must apply for a PIN number before filling it out.

DUE DATE FOR THE FAFSA:

FAFSA website: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov

The Office of Scholarships and Grants has the following available (for most, you must fill out the FAFSA.)

Michigan Competitive Scholarship: must take the ACT and receive a sum of the four tests of 90 or ACT composite score of 23 and above. Based on need.

Michigan Tuition Grant: based on need, private college specific.

Tuition Incentive Program (TIP): students will be notified by mail if they qualify for this. Must have been Medicaid eligible for 24 months out of a 36 month period.

Michigan Nursing Scholarships: colleges select recipients. There is a work requirement that awardees must complete or the scholarship reverts to a loan.

Campus Based Programs: Michigan Work Study, Michigan Educational Opportunity Grant (these are awarded on the basis of the FAFSA and given out by the colleges)

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship: Merit based; nominations by high school principal.
